\nTo ensure the global competitiveness of our graduates, the UWI is making foreign language certification mandatory.<\/p>\n
From Academic Year 2022-2023<\/strong>, new entrants are REQUIRED to do the Foreign Language option instead of FOUN1101 Caribbean Civilisation or FOUN1201 Science, Medicine and Technology, unless they have foreign language certification (see below).<\/p>\n
If students have previously completed a course which qualifies them for EXEMPTION from FOUN1101 Caribbean Civilisation or FOUN1201 Science, Medicine and Technology, but have no prior foreign language certification, they will STILL BE REQUIRED to take the Foreign Language.

\n How many courses am I permitted to do during the Summer School?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

Students are allowed to do a maximum of three<\/u><\/strong> 3-credit courses during the summer. Ideally, you should aim to take no more than two<\/strong><\/u> courses during any given summer, given the short length and compact nature of the summer semester. <\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n
\n How many courses can I register for? <\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

FULL-TIME students<\/strong> register for ten (10) courses per academic year (Aug-May) i.e. 5 courses in semester I and 5 courses in semester II.  To enter the full-time Programme, your letter of offer to UWI should indicate acceptance into the 3-year programme (full matriculation). Please note that students who are in full-time employment are NOT permitted to register full-time.<\/p>\n
PART-TIME students<\/strong> register for five (5) courses per academic year (Aug-May) i.e. 3 courses in semester I and 2 courses in semester II OR vice versa. <\/em>To enter the part-time Programme, your letter of offer should indicate acceptance into the 4-year programme (lower level matriculation). Students with lower level matriculation are not permitted to register full time until they have successfully completed 24 credits<\/strong>. <\/em><\/p>\n
Please note that registration is done on a semester by semester basis. Therefore, you can only register for semester I courses in August\/September and semester II courses in January\/February.

\n What are co-curricular courses? <\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

Undergraduate students at UWI Cave Hill are allowed to take one (1) co-curricular course as part of their degree programme. These co-curricular courses are offered by the Office of Student Services (OSS). The list of courses offered in any semester can be found at the OSS website at https:\/\/kinsta.cavehill.uwi.edu\/studentservices\/academic-support\/co-curricular-credits.aspx<\/a> .<\/p>\n
Please note that Co-curricular course credits are not included in the calculation of your overall GPA. These are ‘pass’ or ’fail’ courses. <\/strong>

A prerequisite is a course that must be taken before the course you are seeking to take. For example, if MKTG 3001 has MKTG 2001 as a prerequisite, then MKTG 2001 must be taken and passed before you can take MKTG 3001. The prerequisites for all undergraduate courses in the Cave Hill School of Business and Management can be viewed at the Prerequisites Brochure.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n
\n What are the types of undergraduate courses available at UWI?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

Course Types<\/strong>
\nUndergraduate degrees in the Cave Hill School of Business and Management may comprise of:<\/p>\n
\n
Foundation Courses – <\/strong> these are University courses which are designed to engender sensitivity to Caribbean culture, ideologies and realities. These are compulsory <\/strong>for all undergraduate students in the Cave Hill School of Business and Management unless an exemption is granted by the UWI due to previous certification in an equivalent course. Please go to the FAQ entitled 'Foundation Courses and the New Language Policy' for further information<\/strong><\/em>. <\/li>\n
Core Courses <\/strong>– these are fundamental to your area of study and must be completed. No other courses can be substituted.   <\/li>\n
Options <\/strong>– selections from lists of required courses. For example, you may be given a list of four (4) options from which you are required to choose two (2).<\/li>\n
Electives <\/strong>–   these are approved courses that can be selected from within the Cave Hill School of Business and Management or from any other department\/school at the Cave Hill Campus. Typically you will be approved to take a course as an elective if the number in the course code begins with 2 or 3. For example MKTG 2<\/strong>001 or MKTG 3<\/strong>002. Students are encouraged to take courses in other departments and faculties to broaden their educational experience and knowledge base as long as they have the prerequisites. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n <\/div> \n \n \n
\n What is an override and how do I apply for it?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n
\n
An override is the term used to describe the granting of permission by the university administration to take a course which the online registration system did not allow the student to register for. <\/p>\n
The online system will prevent students from registering for courses for several reasons: These include:
\n(a) the student has not passed the course prerequisite(s)
\n(b) the time slot for the course is clashing with that of another course which the student has already registered for
\n(c) there is a Level Restriction. This means that the student has to either reach a certain level in their degree programme; pass a certain number of courses or pass courses of a certain type before they qualify to register for the course in question.  <\/p>\n
When a Faculty member or a member of the Administrative Staff has advised that you apply for an override, the online application can be made at https:\/\/overrides.cavehill.uwi.edu\/login\/<\/a><\/p>\n
It is advised that time be taken to detail the reason why the override is being sought on the online application to enhance the possibility of permission being granted.<\/p>\n
If the override is approved, then the student is permitted to self-register for the course.<\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n
\n What is meant by Advanced Standing and Course Exemption?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

You may be eligible for Advanced Standing<\/strong> and\/or Course Exemptions,<\/strong> depending on past educational achievements.<\/p>\n
Please note that Exemptions\/Advanced Standing for which you are eligible may already be entered on your student academic record\/transcript on CHOL. However it is your responsibility to check to ensure that your academic record is complete. \n Who needs to take Preliminary Mathematics and Preliminary English?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n
\n
Having proficiency in Mathematics and English is necessary for the successful completion of a degree at the UWI.<\/p>\n
English Proficiency<\/strong><\/u>
\nApplicants to the Cave Hill School of Business and Management who do not have at minimum a Grade 1 in CSEC English Language (General Proficiency) will have to take the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) in the summer before entering university. <\/font><\/p>\n
Students who miss the ELPT or fail to pass this test will be required to take FOUN0100 – Fundamentals of Written English – a preliminary English course.

\nProof of proficiency in English (either through prior qualification, a pass in the ELPT or a pass in FOUN0100-Fundamentals of Written English) is required to register for FOUN1008 – An Introduction to Professional Writing or FOUN1006 – Exposition for Academic Purposes.<\/strong> FOUN1008 and FOUN1006 are university Foundation courses . Mathematics Proficiency<\/strong><\/u>
\nApplicants who do not have at minimum Grade 1 or Grade 2 in CSEC Mathematics (General Proficiency) will have to take the Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) in the summer before entering university. <\/font><\/p>\n
Students who miss the MPT or fail to achieve a pass in the test will be advised to register for ECON0101- Preliminary Mathematics for Social Sciences. Currently, the Department of Economics is giving students the opportunity to retake the MPT in the January following their entrance into UWI. However, availability of the January test is NOT guaranteed. <\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n
Proof of proficiency in Mathematics ( either through prior qualification, a pass in the MPT, or a pass in ECON0101 – Preliminary Mathematics for Social Sciences) is required to register for ECON 1003 – Introduction to Mathematics for Social Sciences and ECON 1005 – Introduction to Statistics.<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n

\n What are the basic citation\/referencing guidelines to prevent plagiarism?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n
\n
Every time that you use ideas (expressed in your own words) or words\/direct quotes that appear in a document written by someone else, you must formally reference that work (document), even if it is not something that has been published.
\n
\nCiting Ideas\/Opinions\/Statistics\/Findings<\/strong>
\nIf you paraphrase (put into your own words) another person's ideas, you must still provide a reference citation. Be careful that your paraphrasing is not so close to the original that it would be better to simply use a direct quotation with quotation marks. When citing an idea\/opinion\/statistic\/finding that you have paraphrased, you are required to attach the person’s last name and the year of the publication that you took the idea\/opinion\/statistic from next to the idea.<\/p>\n
Idea : Consumer Behaviour is a complex and ever changing (Smith, 2016). Smith is the person this idea came from and it came from a document that Smith published in 2016.  <\/strong><\/p>\n
This citation (Smith, 2016) occurs within the body of your assignment and then the full reference ( using either the Chicago or the Harvard Referencing system) must appear in your bibliography or references list. Chicago and Harvard are the citation systems approved for the Faculty of Social Sciences. Pay attention to the guide for citing electronic sources since these are becoming increasingly prevalent in student assignments.<\/p>\n
Citing Words\/Direct Quotes<\/strong>
\nIf you are citing an author ad verbatim \/ word for word<\/em> <\/strong>you are required to put those words in quotation marks, and at the end of the direct quote you are required to give the author’s name, year of publication and the page<\/strong> that the direct quote came from.<\/p>\n
Direct Quote: ‘Consumer behaviour is a dynamic phenomenon, and even more so during the millennial generation’ (Smith, 2016: 45<\/strong>).<\/p>\n
Leaving off quotation marks and page number are a significant error, even if you give the name and year and page number at the end of the sentence or passage. <\/p>\n
It is poor academic practice to structure your assignment using a string of direct quotes, even if they are correctly cited. Good students are able to read, synthesize and paraphrase.<\/strong><\/p>\n
The full reference for direct quotes must also appear in the bibliography\/reference list a the end of your assignment.<\/p>\n

Cite information from sources such as speeches, interviews, photographs, films, laboratory procedures, software programs, musical or dramatic compositions, audio or visual media, works of art or architecture, maps, statistical tables, Web pages, electronic databases or any other source that was created by someone else.<\/li>\n
If you feel uncomfortable about the integrity of your assignment and want to identify areas where you may need to properly cite or paraphrase, check your assignment with Turnitin<\/a>, a programme which checks your document against published sources to determine the percentage of plagiarised material. When running your document through Turnitin do not include your bibliography, as this will significantly elevate your plagiarism percentage.<\/li>\n
The penalty for plagiarism is often severe. If you are unsure or confused about documenting an assignment, it is your responsibility to ask your Lecturer or the Librarian at the Sidney Martin Library. Good discussions on academic integrity and plagiarism can also be found online.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n <\/div> \n \n \n

Plagiarism is using someone else’s ideas, results or words without giving the necessary credit. You may be permitted to carry forward your coursework if you failed an examination for medical reasons. The medical reason(s) must be certified by the Student Health Clinic before permission can be sought from the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The course should be repeated within the next academic year <\/strong>and a form requesting the carry forward must be completed. \n How do I apply to do a course by \u2018Exams only\u2019?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

A final year student can request permission from the Examinations Section, through the Dean to register for one or two courses by ‘exams only’. Exams Only permits the student to complete the course without attending instructional sessions and without submitting coursework. Exams Only typically applies where students either failed the final examination or did not take it because of medical reasons or exceptional circumstances. To be eligible, the student should have been previously done the course and completed all of the coursework. Exams Only will not be granted for a first time course attempt.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n
\n I missed an exam. What should I do?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n
\n
If you missed an exam, you can retake it at the next available sitting. You would need to re-register for the course at the next offering. If you missed an examination for medical reasons, you should visit the Student Health Clinic. Coursework may<\/em><\/strong> be carried forward if the student missed an examination for medical reasons. The request for coursework to be carried forward must be approved by the Faculty of Social Sciences Office, under the direction of the Student Health Clinic.<\/p>\n
Medical leave during the semester or during the examination period must be approved by the Student Health Clinic, therefore any paperwork from your private doctor\/medical facility must be submitted to the Student Health Clinic for consideration. All registered students should register with the Clinic in order to access the services available.

\n When can I do an oral examination?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

Up to two <\/strong>orals are offered to final year students who are pending graduation. Orals are offered for courses that the student previously failed with a mark of 45 or higher. Orals are optional. The student can choose to retake the course at the next available semester. <\/p>\n
Students are required to prepare for orals as they do for written examinations.<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n
\n Where can I apply for a discussion or remark for a course?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n
\n
A request for a discussion (where you go through the script with your lecturer) or remark (grade can be changed) must be made to the Examinations Section. <\/strong>Discussions are free of charge<\/strong> and can only be requested if you have failed the course. Remarks can be requested if you have failed the course or if you are dissatisfied with the final grade\/mark. There is a fee attached to the remark, and there is a stipulated time-frame published by the Examinations Section for requesting a discussion or a remark.

A student who for good reason wishes to be absent from an academic programme for a semester or an academic year must apply for formal Leave of Absence through the Dean’s Office. The leave of absence request form may be downloaded from the Student Resources webpage.<\/span><\/p>\n
Leave of Absence may be granted for one semester or for an academic year. Leave of Absence, however, will not be granted for more than two consecutive academic years, or in the first year of the programme. A student who wishes to deregister from all courses in the first year of their programme must request deferral until either the next semester or the next academic year.<\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n
\n How do I find out what my academic standing is?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

At the end of each semester when your grades are posted to your transcript, your academic standing is noted above the courses taken (see highlighted section in the example below)<\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n
\n I was asked to withdraw as a result of unsatisfactory performance, how soon will I be allowed to resume my studies?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

No sooner than one (1) year after the date of withdrawal can you reapply for admission. A student who is Required to Withdraw (RTW) may request a meeting with the Dean, who can examine the case and decide whether the RTW requirement can be waived.<\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n
\n There is a \u201cwarning\u201d status on my on-line student record. What does this mean?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

A “warning” status reflects poor academic performance (i.e. the receipt of a term GPA of 1.99 or less). This should be taken seriously and the student should seek counsel from his\/her academic advisor. You are required to make an appointment with your Academic Advisor to go through the courses available and select those which will fit into your UWI academic programme. The courses selected must be approved by your Head of Department and Dean on your application form.<\/p>\n
Students interested in studying abroad are normally required to contact the university that they wish to attend to secure the course outlines for the courses they plan to take while overseas. These course outlines are assessed by UWI Faculty to determine if the courses are UWI equivalents. <\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n

Students of the Faculty have the option of pursuing courses at another approved university for one semester or for an academic year under the Student Exchange Programme. Financing<\/strong>
\nUWI students who go on study abroad pay their tuition to UWI as normal., though they spend the semester\/academic year overseas. However, they will be personally responsible for covering the cost of travel, food and accommdation while away on study abroad. <\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n

Students who opt to complete part of their university degree abroad at a partner institution will reap several benefits. They are able to experience new cultures and educational environments; explore new avenues for research and learning; and build lifelong networks and friendships that can enhance their career prospects. <\/p>\n
Undergraduate<\/strong> students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 up to the date of application to study abroad. The final semester of your programme must be spent at Cave Hill. <\/p>\n
