Trinidad and Tobago National Awards for members of The UWI community

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) proudly congratulates the recipients of the 2020 and 2021 Trinidad and Tobago National Awards, recently hosted by the Office of the President, after a two-year delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the Award recipients are Visitor of The UWI, the Honourable Justice Rolston Nelson (retired) and Chair of The UWI St. Augustine Campus Council, Ms Sharon Christopher, as well as current and former members of staff.

Dr. Hugh Sealy served our University and Caribbean region with distinction. He put his mind and heart into tackling the climate crisis facing the Caribbean. His teaching, research, scholarly publications, and expert contributions to technical advisory boards reflected his passion and commitment to both advancing the science on climate change issues faced by small states of the Caribbean. He also shared his knowledge and expertise with younger generations. The UWI family feels a tremendous loss.

March 21 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The annual observance is recognised annually on the day that police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid "pass laws" in 1960 in Sharpeville, South Africa. In a commemorative statement, Professor of Social History and Director of the Centre for Reparation Research at The University of the West Indies, Professor Verene A. Shepherd acknowledged, “The global community has also made strides in terms of the elimination of racism and racial discrimination… But we cannot rest on our laurels.”
Serious preparation needed for the Caribbean in the wake of Russia-Ukraine conflict

Almost three weeks ago, Russian forces invaded Ukraine, the result of which has been described as a full-on war. On Thursday, March 10, The University of the West Indies’ Office of the Vice-Chancellor together with The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) held a Vice-Chancellor’s Forum, examining the current situation and its implications for the global oil industry and the Caribbean.

The following statement is issued by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, on the passing of Professor Emeritus Selwyn Ryan, renowned social scientist and former University Director of the Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at The University of the West Indies. He was also the Director of the St. Augustine Branch of the Institute from 1986 to 2003.
