Washburn students may earn six hours of academic credit; Cave Hill students may obtain three Level III credits per course.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<strong><span style=\"color:#B22222;\">Please note that specific courses in the summer progamme vary from year to year.&nbsp; Please also note that the Faculty cannot guarantee that the programme will be offered every year, and that students should plan their timetables accordingly.<\/span> <\/strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\tThe programme curriculum utilises both traditional classroom methods and site visits to observe relevant legal institutions in action. Students have found that the opportunity to study law in the summer study programme not only enhances their legal studies, but enables them to learn about and enjoy the rich heritages of both Caribbean and American cultures and legal traditions.\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"lc-block\">\n<div editable=\"rich\">\n<h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tCourse Descriptions<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"lc-block\" editable=\"rich\">\n\t\t\t\tTwo courses are being planned for the <strong>Summer 2020<\/strong> program:<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<strong><u>LAW 3580 International Law of Indigenous Peoples (May 25-June 11, 2020; final examination on June 11, 2020)<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<strong><u>Course Directors<\/u><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prof Tonya Kowalski, Director of International Legal Programs, and Co-Director of the International and Comparative Law Center, Washburn University School of Law; <a href=\"http:\/\/washburnlaw.edu\/profiles\/kowalski-tonya.html\">http:\/\/washburnlaw.edu\/profiles\/kowalski-tonya.html<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Dr David S Berry, Dean of Law, Cave Hill Campus, and University Dean of Law, Faculty of Law, UWI, Cave Hill; <a href=\"https:\/\/kinsta.cavehill.uwi.edu\/Law\/staff\/david-s-berry.aspx\">https:\/\/kinsta.cavehill.uwi.edu\/Law\/staff\/david-s-berry.aspx<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<strong><u>Course Content:<\/u><\/strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\tThis course will explore international human rights law through the example of Indigenous peoples. It introduces students to the basic international human rights regime within the United Nations and other organizations, including the Inter-American system of human rights.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\tThe course is relevant to any student interested in practicing energy law or intellectual property, as a great portion of human rights claims involve exploitation of Indigenous natural resources, genetic data, medical knowledge, and art forms.&nbsp; More generally, students will study how international law does\u2014or does not\u2014operate as legal authority in U.S. and Commonwealth Caribbean cases, as well as how to develop an international legal strategy for clients whose human rights claims are not well-recognized domestically. The materials will deepen knowledge about how national sovereignty operates in a globalizing world. Topics will include client interviewing, client counselling, negotiation, mediation, arbitration and hybrid dispute resolution processes. In addition to learning the theory and law of alternative dispute resolution, students will engage in simulated exercises that will highlight the distinctions between the various alternative dispute resolution techniques. Spaces are allocated in accordance with need (i.e., a student needs a single <u>Level III Law course<\/u> to graduate).&nbsp; The Faculty also reserves the right to allocate spaces in accordance with the timing of the request by the student, and in light of the maximum number of students allowed under the American Bar Association rules and regulations.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\tCave Hill students will pay tuition to Cave Hill at a rate to be announced. Classes meet from 9:00 am-1:10 pm, Monday through Thursday, with a thirty-minute break.
