A Journey of Passion and Purpose
Mia’s story begins in Barbados, where she was nurtured by her parents. Her educational path took her from Grazettes Primary School to the Alexandra School, culminating in an Associate's Degree in Computer Studies from Barbados Community College (BCC). During her time at BCC, Mia not only excelled academically but also pursued certifications in Photography, Computer Graphics and Interior Design, setting the stage for a flourishing career in photography.
With over seventeen (17) years of experience, Mia honed her craft at Pro Photo Studio and collaborated with renowned photographers, enhancing her skills and artistic vision. Her passion for film blossomed during her studies at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts (Creative Arts). Under the mentorship of Gladstone Yearwood, Mia produced several impactful works, including the poignant films “A Father’s Love” and “Going Green”.
Beyond her creative pursuits, Mia is deeply committed to environmental conservation and the welfare of vulnerable populations, particularly children and animals. Currently, she channels her passion through her role at CERMES, where she continues to make a positive impact.
A Vital Force at CERMES
Since joining CERMES in 2017, Mia has demonstrated remarkable adaptability and a keen ability to learn. Under the guidance of the Administrative Assistant – the late Dr. Jennifer Hurley, she quickly mastered the intricacies of secretarial work and the administrative procedures of The UWI, Cave Hill Campus. Her proactive approach ensures that the various tasks required for the smooth functioning of CERMES are completed efficiently and effectively.
Mia's enthusiasm for enhancing CERMES’ social media presence has resulted in a wealth of engaging content, including short videos, posters and photographs that enrich the Centre’s outreach efforts. Her creativity has played a vital role in promoting CERMES’ expanding YouTube channel and social media platforms, allowing for greater engagement with the community.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mia’s flexibility and willingness to step in during critical shortages were instrumental in meeting project deadlines and maintaining essential data collection. Her involvement in both local and overseas field trips has allowed her to apply her creative skills while also learning new techniques, such as piloting a research drone and conducting standardized sargassum monitoring.
Looking Ahead
As Mia continues to excel in her role, she is also pursuing an MPhil in Natural Resources Management, further enhancing her ability to contribute meaningfully to CERMES and the broader University community. Her vision for the future includes expanding her impact through her Blu Chair Productions business, focusing on environmental research and supporting initiatives for animal welfare and orphanages.
A Personal Philosophy
Mia lives by the belief that "success doesn’t require you to look out the window; it only requires you to look in the mirror". This self-reflective approach, combined with her faith – "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5-6) – guides her in all her endeavours.
