As a Lecturer in Biology and Deputy Dean of Academic Affairs in the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences (BCS) within our Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus, Dr. Browne has made remarkable contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge, the development of innovative educational tools and the conservation of the natural environment. His journey from the village of Cayon, St. Kitts and Nevis, to becoming a respected academic and researcher is a testament to his unwavering passion for biology and his belief in the limitless potential of individuals to learn and grow.

A Lifelong Passion for Biology
Dr. Browne’s love for biology began at an early age. Growing up in St. Kitts and Nevis, he never outgrew the joy of exploring his backyard, observing the rich variety of plants and animals around him. This curiosity blossomed into a passion for scientific exploration, and he soon chose to pursue biology as a career. Dr. Browne completed his BSc. degree with a Double Major in Biology at The UWI Cave Hill Campus in 2003, before embarking on his PhD. that same year, focusing on the population genetics of the hawksbill sea turtle. His work with this endangered species not only contributed to scientific understanding but also played a crucial role in the conservation efforts of the Barbados Sea Turtle Project.
Dr. Browne’s commitment to conservation extended beyond research. As Field Director of the Barbados Sea Turtle Project from 2009 to 2019, he worked tirelessly to protect local sea turtle populations and mentored researchers from across the region. His expertise in both molecular biology and database creation helped him bridge the gap between fieldwork and technological innovation, ensuring his research was not only impactful but also accessible to others in the scientific community.
Advancing Education and Technology
As a passionate educator, Dr. Browne has consistently sought ways to enhance the learning experience for students. His innovative approach to teaching is evident in the courses he has developed for The UWI Global Campus, such as Research Methods, Research Seminar 1 and Research Seminar 2. These courses, designed to equip students with the essential skills for conducting research and analyzing data, reflect Dr. Browne’s belief in empowering learners to reach their full potential. Additionally, his contribution to the Institute for Sustainable Development’s Research Methods for Disaster Risk Management course at The UWI Mona Campus demonstrates his commitment to integrating science with real-world challenges.
Beyond traditional teaching, Dr. Browne is a proponent of using technology to enhance education. As a facilitator of workshops on Respondus software in collaboration with the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), he has helped fellow educators embrace digital tools that streamline assessments and enhance student engagement.
Contributions to the Scientific Community
Dr. Browne’s research interests have evolved over the years, from studying the biology of endemic and invasive species to exploring the complex relationships between parasites and their hosts. His collaboration with the McGill Institute for Advanced Materials and the Department of Chemistry at McGill University has led to exciting developments in the field of bioinspired materials. In particular, his research into the slime produced by the endemic Barbados velvet worm has revealed its potential for use in advanced materials, demonstrating the exciting intersection of biology, chemistry and technology.
His published works, including a notable article in the Journal of the American Chemical Society on the peculiar phosphonate modifications of velvet worm slime, reflect his continued dedication to advancing scientific knowledge. Dr. Browne’s contributions to the field have not gone unnoticed, with multiple book chapters and articles showcasing his work in the realms of marine science, fisheries and molecular biology.
Dr. Browne is immensely proud of the significant impact achieved by a public lecture he, along with his BCS colleagues – Dr. Henri Vallès and Professor Julia Horrocks, hosted on invasive species. The lecture, titled "Fighting off the Invaders: How UWI Ecologists are Helping Tackle Species Invasions in Barbados", was held at the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex on June 5, 2023. This event highlighted the ongoing efforts of The UWI ecologists to combat invasive species. In addition to his environmental work, Dr. Browne is also dedicated to supporting academic growth within his department. He designed and maintains the BCS Department Advisee Matrix, an essential tool that aids academic advisors in guiding students through the various degree programmes offered in the BCS Department.
Recognizing Excellence
Dr. Browne’s achievements are numerous and include being recognized for the “Most Outstanding Research Article” by the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences (FPAS) in 2009-2010 and completing a Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning in 2019. He is also an ad hoc reviewer for Regional Studies in Marine Science and continues to play a key role in shaping the direction of biological research in the Caribbean.
His dedication to personal and professional growth is evident in his commitment to lifelong learning. In 2022, he completed the Research Supervisor Development Course, further refining his skills as a mentor and educator. Dr. Browne’s philosophy that “each person’s potential is limitless” resonates not only in his research but also in his approach to teaching and leadership. His belief in continuous self-improvement and his willingness to share his knowledge have made him an invaluable asset to the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST).

His work with the Barbados Sea Turtle Project, his involvement in regional scientific initiatives, and his active participation in various workshops and educational programmes reflect his commitment to advancing science in the community.
