This was considered by the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) Ad Hoc Working Group on Methods, and although a report on <em>\u201cExpansion of Existing Data Collection Systems to Capture, Store and Manage Social and Economic Data from the Fisheries Sector\u201d<\/em> (Banks et al 2002) has been prepared little progress has been made by fisheries authorities towards implementation.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tIn keeping with the Memorandum of Understanding between the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) and the School for Graduate Studies and Research, University of the West Indies, the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) , the SocMon lead organisation for the English-speaking Caribbean, is offering training in socio-economic monitoring to fishery authorities and stakeholders at five CRFM sites.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<strong>Goal and objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThe goal of the project is to promote the use of social and economic data in fisheries management in CRFM Member States by:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Training 50 fisheries management stakeholders in 5 CRFM member countries in SocMon Caribbean methods&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Initiation of 5 site monitoring programs for fisheries-related coastal management ( via a US$ 2,500 sub-grant)<\/li>\n<li>Documentation of training and monitoring initiation processes to aid replication, with improvement in future rounds of SocMon activity<\/li>\n<li>Submission of compatible data to the Reef Base Socio-Economic global database to ensure data sharing<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThe project will contribute towards building capacity among all fisheries stakeholders \u2013 fisheries officers, fishers, landing site personnel, planners, coastal managers, enforcement agencies, local consultants, and others &#8211; in socio-economic monitoring in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<strong>Duration<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 October 2007 to 31 March 2009<\/li>\n<li>No-cost extension to 31December 2009<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<strong>Geographic location<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tSelected English-speaking Caribbean CARICOM countries<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Barbados<\/li>\n<li>Dominica<\/li>\n<li>Nevis<\/li>\n<li>Grenada<\/li>\n<li>St. Vincent and the Grenadines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<strong>Funding<\/strong><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThe project is funded by a NOAA International Coral Reef Conservation Grant.
